Backend Service Mesh

Our infrastructure uses the same VL1 Noise-encrypted transport as the ORBTR agent fleet.

Connection Grades
A — Noise UDP
Direct encrypted UDP. Fastest transport. Sub-millisecond latency same-region. Requires same network origin or open UDP port.
B — QUIC
Reliable UDP with multiplexing and congestion control. Activates when Noise handshake fails but UDP is reachable.
B — gRPC
HTTP/2 with native reliability, flow control, multiplexing, and encryption. Activates when UDP-based transports are unavailable.
C — WebSocket
Full transport via PeerConnectionManager. Works through HTTP proxies and firewalls. Activates when UDP/QUIC fail (cross-origin, blocked ports).
C — TLS Bootstrap
HTTPS seed connection (VL1 hijacked). Permanent fallback — goes dormant when a higher-grade transport connects, reactivates if all transports fail.
Connection Capability
Solid — Gossip + Dispatch
Fully muxed connection. Carries both gossip (LAD sync) and dispatch (RPC) on a single stream.
Dashed — Gossip Only
Mux negotiation failed. Carries gossip but cannot route RPC dispatch. Investigate if persistent.
Dotted — Recent
From LAD latency records (last 10 min). Connection may have since dropped. Capability unknown.
Long Dash — Cross-Region
Connection between different regions. Higher latency expected.
Health mapping: Grades A-B = healthy, C-D = degraded, TLS only = connecting, No transport = unreachable.
Mesh RPC Health
Tests LAD → transport → dispatch. Refreshes every 30s.
